Geeks on Wheels has recently wrapped up a six-session Seniors Tech Club in partnership with Glen Eden Library and Community Waitākere.
The programme was created after Glen Eden Library asked older members of the community what tech skills they most wanted help with.
Their responses were then used to shape a practical series. This covered the everyday digital tasks that can sometimes feel confusing or overwhelming.
Our Auckland technician Jack, donned his teacher’s cap for the duration of the course and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
What did the Senior Tech Club cover?
Throughout the programme, participants learned about a range of useful topics. From device basics and online safety to passwords, email attachments, messaging apps, online shopping and banking.
The sessions were designed to be practical and welcoming, giving everyone the opportunity to follow along on their own device, ask questions and get support from the Geeks on Wheels team and other programme helpers.
Rather than simply talking through each topic, participants were encouraged to give things a go for themselves. This hands-on approach was one of the most appreciated parts of the programme. Helping attendees feel more comfortable using technology in their everyday lives.
Listening and adapting along the way
The programme continued to develop based on feedback from the group.
Larger text, printed resources, a projector and short quizzes were introduced throughout the series. These made the sessions easier to follow and helped reinforce what had been learned.
By the final session, participants were asking about more advanced topics, including digital wallets, connecting different devices and transferring photos and files. This showed just how far many of them had come since the programme began.
What happens next?
The feedback we received was really positive and a great pleasure to read through. Including comments such as “Thank you for a most informative programme. Jack and helpers were great”.
Feedback from the programme also showed there is plenty of demand for more practical digital learning, including follow-up sessions and opportunities for individual support.
