It’s Winter, so inevitably, we’ll be spending a lot more time indoors looking at our screens! The colder weather makes for a great excuse to binge a new TV show or watch your favourite movies! Yet normal TV is a bit lacklustre when it comes to variety. So, it might be a good time to invest in a streaming service, whether that be your first one, or another one on top of your usual. But, which one? To make that decision a little easier for you, we’ve put a list together of some of the best NZ streaming services in 2023!
All prices are in NZD and correct as of June 2023.
Netflix
When it comes to variety, Netflix is the reigning champion. From binge-worthy Netflix originals like Stranger Things and The Crown, to a diverse range of international content, Netflix appeals to a very wide audience!
Prices range from $12.99 a month for a basic plan to $24.99 a month for a premium plan!
So, if you’re starting from scratch and looking to get your first streaming service, Netflix is a great option!
However, it’s worth noting Netflix’s recent crackdown on account sharing between different households. Basically, anyone outside of your account’s primary location will either have to purchase their own account or you can buy them an extra member sub-account for an extra $7.99 a month.
No one is sure when exactly Netflix will enforce these new rules, but in a shareholder letter released with its first-quarter performance update, Netflix stated their password crackdown would be completed by the end of June.
Disney+
Disney+ is home to a large library of content from Disney. It carries shows and movies from Disney, Pixar, Marvel Studios, Star Wars, National Geographic and more. So, if you’re a fanatic of any of the above, then Disney+ might be for you.
In addition, if you’re wanting to head away from the traditional family-friendly content, then you’ll always have the option of Disney’s content hub, Star. Star features films and series from Disney-owned properties such as FX, 20th Century Studios, and 20th Television.
For a monthly plan you’ll be paying $14.99 or if you want to save 15% you can go for an annual plan for just $149.99.
Neon
Owned by SKY TV, Neon is a local NZ streaming service that offers both New Zealand and international content. It features popular titles such as Game of Thrones, Westworld and Big Little Lies.
Neon carries content from Warner Bros, Sony, NBCU, FX and BBC. And even though Kiwis don’t have access to the popular American streaming service, Max (formerly HBO Max), Neon saves the day by also carrying a lot of their titles. Including shows like White Lotus, The Last of Us and Euphoria.
Pricing ranges from $12.99 to $17.99 per month, or $179.99 annually.
Amazon Prime Video
Amazon Prime Video provides an extensive library of movies, TV shows and original content. Their content comes from production companies and networks such as AMC, NBCUniversal, ITV and more.
Considering Amazon Prime Video’s diverse collection, the streaming service offers the most reasonable subscription pricing yet, only charging $8 a month.
So, if you’re looking for a service that carries the classics like Downtown Abbey, Breaking Bad and The Office. Or you enjoy popular Amazon Originals such as Fleabag, The Boys, or new releases like Citadel, try out Amazon Prime Video!
Apple TV+
Apple TV+ values quality over quantity, with their number of titles usually sitting in the 100s. However, viewers consider their content more consistently impressive with higher watching potential compared to some streaming platforms.
The service carries exclusive shows such as Ted Lasso, Platonic and David Attenborough’s most recent season of Prehistoric Planet. All of which score above 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
For this high value content, Apple charges $12.99 a month. However, if you buy an eligible Apple device and redeem the offer within 90 days, Apple will give you 3 months of endless Apple TV+ for free!
Shudder
Lastly, we have Shudder! It’s definitely not one of the most popular NZ streaming services, but it’s a hit with horror enthusiasts! It specialises in horror, thriller, and supernatural content. And it features a collection of movies, series, and documentaries from various eras and subgenres.
A monthly membership will cost you $7.99 a month, while an annual membership, costing $79.99 will mean you’re actually only paying $6.67 a month.
