All You NEED To Know About Hyperfibre
Late last year, telecommunications infrastructure provider Chorus, launched Hyperfibre. Wondering what that is? We have the answers.
What is Hyperfibre:
Hyperfibre is a super-fast fibre connection that will soon be available to homes and businesses across New Zealand. With download speeds of up to 4000Mbps, its nearly 4 times faster than the previous fastest fibre plan. Along with this huge increase in download speeds, upload speeds will also increase up to 4000Mbps (that’s pretty fast!).
Chorus also has plans to launch Hyperfibre with speeds up to 8000Mbps in the future.

What Are The Benefits Of Hyperfibre:
Hyperfibre uses our existing fibre infrastructure and all that’s required to access it is a quick upgrade to the chorus ONT on your property! The new ONTs have the potential to provide speeds of up to 10 Gbps, regardless of how far away your property is from the closest exchange! Once you’ve upgraded, Hyperfibre allows processing of high volumes of data with minimal delay, making this ultrafast fibre great for businesses who transfer large amounts of data, such as creative industries.
Should You Get It?
Is it worth switching? That depends on your usage. If you want the fastest possible internet, then it is definitely worth upgrading. If you only have a handful of devices connected at any one time and are already on a fibre plan, the difference may not be noticeable. Things will download and upload quicker but chances are, they are already fast enough. If you’re a business however, faster internet is always beneficial!
It’s worth noting, older hardware will not be capable of reaching Hyperfibre speeds. If you have a wired network, you need to make sure your switches, routers and devices have 10Gbps Ethernet Ports. You’ll also need to make sure your Wi-Fi router and devices support 802.11ac. Older hardware will work fine, but your internet speeds will be nowhere near Hyperfibre level. If you’re not sure whether your equipment is up to spec, call Geeks on Wheels and we can check all that for you. Book here.
Chorus has stated that Hyperfibre will offer great opportunities for industries that rely on real-time communication and high-resolution images. These could include companies that use remote medical diagnostics and surgery, as well as gaming and interactive entertainment services.
