Windows 10 End of Life

Windows 10 will be ending support on October 14th, 2025! Although this may sound like a long way off, this end of support is particularly unique. This is because it will be the first time an operating system has a hardware requirement. So, if you have older devices running Windows 10, after mid-October next year, Microsoft will no longer provide free security updates or technical support for those devices. But don’t panic! We’ll walk you through some solutions, whether you want to upgrade for optimal security or stick with your current Windows 10 devices.

What Windows version is your device?

First up, before you start ruminating on what new devices you’ll need, check what Windows version your current devices are running. If you purchased a new Windows computer from Geeks on Wheels in the last 2 years, you can rest assured that it will be running Windows 11.

If you have a device or older computers, check what version of Windows they’re running on by pressing and holding down on the Windows logo key and the R key. After that, type winver in the Open box, and then select OK. Or, read our blog which covers how to check your OS version in detail by clicking here!

Start preparing for Windows 10 end-of-life now!

It’s a while away yet, but don’t put off worrying about Windows 10 end of support! Why? With such a global shift, demand for Windows 11 devices is likely to skyrocket closer to the end of support for Windows 10, most likely leading to a shift in prices too. So, you’ll want ample notice to budget! Additionally, you should give yourself time to evaluate what options might personally suit you, that way when the time comes, you’re not rushing to make a decision!

What does this mean for businesses?

If you are in a business, such demands impacting price and availability will affect how effectively you transition your business to Windows 11. You’ll most likely need to replace multiple computers, so it’s essential you start planning early, ensuring you have sufficient time, resources and cash flow to transition smoothly without facing disruptions from unsupported devices. You might even want to spread the upgrades over time, rather than all at once!

Don’t want to make the move to Windows 11?

There are a couple of other options if you really don’t want to make the move to Windows 11 devices. These include cloud-based migration or purchasing extended security updates from Microsoft for Windows 10 users. Microsoft’s paid security updates will require an annual fee.

So, we can explore these options for you and/or your business if you really want to stick to your old devices. However, we would personally highly recommend opting for newer devices with an up-to-date operating system for the best performance and security.
